Often referred to as Spent Mushroom Substrate (SMS), Mushroom Compost is the growing medium that results from the mushroom growing process. Mushroom compost is made from agricultural materials, such as hay, straw, straw horse bedding, poultry litter, cottonseed meal, cocoa shells, and gypsum. Sphagnum peat moss adds to the organic nature of the substrate, providing a consistent, formulated, and homogeneous product.

Mushroom compost is also referred to as spent mushroom compost since it is obtained from the remains of mushroom farming. It is mainly used as a mulch and soil conditioner to improve ornamental and vegetable gardens. It has a good alkalinity base to help neutralize the soil.

Most gardeners use mushroom compost to improve the moisture content of their soil and in breaking down clay. The most commercially available type is the mushroom substrate that is usually a mix of chicken or horse manure and gypsum or wheat straw. After the materials are composted, they are sterilized to improve the quality before they are taken to the goring trays.

Mushroom compost is sold as conditioners for turfs and lawns where it is used to improve the soil quality. They are equally useful in raised bed mediums and planting mis where it helps to improve water retention.

Benefits of Quality Composting

Quality composting offers many benefits. Some of the most important reasons for using them are as follows:

  • Helps enrich the soil and retain soil moisture
  • Prevents plant diseases and attacks from pests
  • Promotes fungi and bacterial growth that break down organic material
  • Reduces or eliminates the need for using chemical fertilizers

Good bacteria and fungi help breakdown organic matter to produce humus. This is a nutrient-rich material that helps with optimal plant growth.

Unscreened Topsoil

  • Leveling
  • Hole filling
  • Wall support
  • Maintenance & construction tasks
  • Raised bed filler

Screened Topsoil

This type of topsoil has undergone sifting, screening, and removal of all the debris including roots and weed. It is perfectly suited for gardening, as it mixes well with potting soils, fertilizer, and compost. It is also loose and can be easily amended for drainage. Screened topsoil is suited for the following applications:

  • Gardening
  • Planters
  • Flowerpots
  • Lawn preparation

It can also be used as a walkway base. Our topsoil has been screened out for uniform consistency. It is ideally suited for top dressing your garden or lawn or patching bare spots on your lawn. It can also be used for loosening heavy soils and improving the moisture retention of your current soil.
